From London to Virginia
It was Lt Col William Lloyd born in London in 1645 who came to Virginia around 1665, however, his father Thomas may have arrived earlier. What I do know is William was married to Mary Hill by 1665 because there's a Deed for them from Rappahannock Virginia.
Prior to presence in London, my Lloyd's lived in Shropshire and before that Wales. William Lloyd was Lt Col of the Rappahannock Militia and a Justice and a member of the House of Burgesses. He also appears to have been a Vestrymen of North Farnham Parish. William once owned land that Robert "King" Carter acquired and soon Sabine Hall would be built on that land. There's a court record from 1697 for a Ann Redman who says she was a slave in the household of William then his son Thomas, my 8th great grandfather. The interesting thing about this is I have DNA cousin matches on the Redman name so I believe Thomas is the father of at least one of her children. They lived in Richmond County Virginia. DNA plays a major role in finding out the truth of certain family names that married into my Lloyd line. These are Chewning, Exum, Conner and Hinson. William's son Thomas died in 1704 and Thomas's brother John sold the Lloyd plantation to the Carter's. I found a abstract of a Will for Thomas that says he had a large estate with two sloops(sail boats) and a barge. I believe these boats were used for the transportation of Tobacco and maybe even slaves. This Thomas had a son named Thomas who lived in Isle of Wight County Virginia and married a Charity. It was just recent that I discovered her last name, it's Conner, which makes sense because I have a pretty significant amount of Irish DNA, this name is O'Conner, an Irish name. Thomas died in 1740 and I have a copy of his Will where he names his children, one being a William Lloyd, my 6th GG who I found out had moved to Onslow County North Carolina by 1754 as he was in the local Militia there. William has a Will from 1787 where he names his wife as Ann and children, including my 5th GG William Lloyd 1748-1834. This Ann is most likely Ann Wynne. Then we have William Lloyd born 1748, he fought in the Revolutionary War and was at Valley Forge. He married Sarah Chewning. This connection might appear confusing as I believe there were two Sarah Chewning's of Caroline County born about the same time, one married a Joel Durrett and the other married William Lloyd. William had a son named Robert, my 4th GG, in fact William had several sons. Next we find both William and Robert living in Kentucky but before that, Robert would marry Tabitha Rucker in 1794 in Madison Co, Robert himself served in the 5th VA regiment during the War of 1812. There's a few Deeds in Kentucky with both William and Robert on record, in Montgomery Co and Cumberland Co. After William died in 1834, Robert moved to Champaign Co Ohio where he died in 1844, he has a Will there where he names my 3rd GG Belfield Lloyd as the excuter of his Will. Belfield was born 1811 in Orange Co VA, he married twice, once to Rachel Kinzer then to Elizabeth Meeker, my 3rd great grandmother. Belfield moved to Iowa where he died in 1884, he has a probate record. Belfield's son Thomas Rucker Lloyd was born 1844, my 2nd GG who fought in the Civil War for the Union, 22nd infantry out of Iowa. Thomas married Susan Ann Day of New York. They moved to Cottonwood County Minnesota. Their son Victor Lloyd was born 1878 in Iowa, Victor is my great grandfather who married Catherine Moore in Jackson Co MN in 1901. They eventually would move to Minneapolis where Victor was a Teamster and had been a truck driver. On July 22nd 1912 my grandfather Vernon Lloyd was born, in 1935 he married Marie Bourdeau. |
